My Media Criticism class read this article in the first semester of my junior year, and it was one of my favorite pieces I read all throughout college. The article is nearly three years old, but isn’t outdated at all. Many of the problems Powers’ outlines are still very much an issue, and I have a feeling that fellow tumblrers, who are smart but very much take advantage of fetishist aesthetic culture, will agree with me. It perfectly explains why consumers with expendable income will rush to Starbucks with their Macbooks, but will rarely sit there to read a newspaper.
